Can a cold sore cream help to speed healing? Yes. If you use a cream like Zovirax it may help to prevent a cold sore from forming or help existing sores to heal more quickly. Creams like Zovirax contain acyclovir which is an anti-viral agent that is effective against the virus in the tingle or blister stage.

Zovirax cold sore cream also contains dimeticone, propylene glycol, poloxamer 407, cetostearyl alcohol, sodium lauryl sulphate, white soft paraffin, liquid paraffin and purified water. You can get Zovirax in a 2g tube or pump from your local drug store. If you treat the outbreak early enough you may be lucky and the blister stage will be prevented.

A cold sore cream should only be used on the lips and face, not inside he mouth and is not for treating mouth ulcers. So make sure that you really have cold sores before using any cream. You should also make sure that you are not allergic by doing a skin test first.

A cold sore cream should never be used to treat a herpes infection of the eye or genitals. If you have any form of immune system disease, consult your doctor before using any preparation on your lips or face. Your doctor will be able to advise you as to which preparation you should use for your cold sores.

Always wash your face and hands before and after applying your cold sore cream to the affected areas. In the case of Zovirax apply the cream five times a day about every four hours. Use the cream for five days. If the cold sore is still weeping you can use the cream for another five days. If it has not healed in about ten days you should see your doctor.

You might experience mild burning or stinging after using a cold sore cream. This is normal and will subside. However if you experience and swelling of the lips, face and eyelids or a skin rash you should stop using the cream and consult your doctor. You may be having an allergic reaction to the ingredients in the cream.
